Texas Hold'em Glossary — Terms Every Player Should Know

Learning Hold'em rules is one thing. Learning the language is another. Here's a glossary of the terms that come up most often at the table.

Positions

BTN (Button) — The dealer position. Acts second-to-last preflop and last on every postflop street. The best seat at the table.

SB (Small Blind) — Left of the button. Posts the smaller forced bet. Acts first on all postflop streets — the worst position.

BB (Big Blind) — Left of the SB. Posts the larger forced bet. Acts last preflop, but is out of position postflop.

UTG (Under the Gun) — First to act preflop. The earliest and most constrained position.

HJ (Hijack) — Two seats left of the button.

CO (Cutoff) — Directly left of the button. Second-best position after the button.

Betting

3-bet — A re-raise over an open raise. The open raise is the 2-bet; raising that is a 3-bet.

4-bet — A re-raise over a 3-bet. Usually signals a very strong hand or a large bluff.

Shove — Going all-in. Putting all remaining chips in.

Pot — The total chips in the middle at any given moment.

Overbet — Betting more than the pot size. Used for strong value or polarized bluffs.

Check-raise — Checking first, then raising after the opponent bets. Used with strong hands or as a bluff.

Reverse implied odds — When completing your draw could still lose you money because your opponent might have a better hand. A reason to fold even with good pot odds on a draw.

Hands and Strategy

Range — The full set of hands a player could have in a given situation. "What's in their range?" means "what hands could they plausibly hold here?"

Nuts — The best possible hand given the board. "Nut flush" = the strongest flush possible.

Draw — An incomplete hand that needs one more card to complete. A flush draw needs one more suited card.

Outs — The number of cards that would complete your draw. A flush draw typically has 9 outs.

Overpair — A pocket pair higher than any card on the board. E.g., holding AA on a 9-5-2 board.

Set — Three of a kind made with a pocket pair plus one matching board card. Hidden and powerful.

Trips — Three of a kind where the board shows a pair and you hold one matching card. Less concealed than a set.

Streets

Preflop — Before community cards are dealt. You're acting on your two hole cards only.

Flop — The first three community cards revealed.

Turn — The fourth community card.

River — The fifth and final community card.

Showdown — After the final betting round, remaining players reveal their hands to determine the winner.

Other Terms

Rake — The fee the casino or club takes from each pot. The cost of playing.

Bad beat — Losing with a hand that was a heavy statistical favorite. The poker player's version of a hard-luck story.

Stack — Your current chip count.

Short stack — Below the average chip count at the table.

Deep stack — Above average chips. Postflop play becomes more complex and important.

HUD — Heads-Up Display used in online poker. Shows opponent stats like VPIP and PFR in real time.

VPIP — Voluntarily Put Money in Pot. High VPIP = loose player who plays many hands.

PFR — Preflop Raise percentage. Combined with VPIP, tells you a lot about a player's style.

You don't need to memorize all of this. The terms stick naturally as you play. Use this as a reference when something comes up at the table.
